REGIONAL (KRON/BCN) — BART is facing criticism today for providing contractually required bonuses to employees, but the transit agency is arguing the bonuses are an important incentive for hard-working employees.

A longtime critic of BART is blasting the transit agency, saying BART is doling out millions of dollars of bonuses to their employees while claiming they don’t have money for much-needed repairs.

The record rise in BART ridership last year was a bonanza for the rail system’s 3,357 employees, each of whom received a $1,000 bonus because of the surge in commuters.

And they appear on track for another bonus this year.

BART paid a little over $3.3 million to its employees in July, when core ridership on the system averaged 373,569 — 4.5 percent over what was forecast for 2015.
