Press Release

Glazer to Discuss Violent Parties at Air BnBs

Senator Urges Final State Assembly Passage of Bill to Raise Fines for Short Term Rentals

SACRAMENTO – Senator Steve Glazer will hold a press availability Friday, August 14 at 10:30 a.m. to urge passage of his legislation to raise fines for short-term rental abuses. He will also discuss Air BnB’s unprecedented decision to pursue legal claims against one of their short term rental guests. In the last few weeks, there have been short-term rental abuses in Los Angeles and Northern California, including a party at a Sacramento-area rental earlier this month where three people were shot after violence erupted at the gathering.

He will hold the press availability on a Zoom call (see below for call-in information). Credentialed media are invited. Senator Glazer will also be available for proper physically distancing interviews at his district office in Orinda.

Senator Glazer has a bill, SB 1049, which would allow local governments to levy large fines to deter short-term renters from hosting “disruptive and unsafe” house parties. It was approved by the Senate and is poised for a final vote in the Assembly as early as Monday. Senator Glazer’s legislation was in response to a mass shooting last Halloween that left five dead in his district at an Air BnB host house.
