Senator Steven Glazer made remarks on the Senate floor regarding Senate Joint Resolution 14. The following is a full transcript of those remarks.

STEVEN GLAZER, Senator from the 7th Senate District: This resolution SJR 14 calls on Congress and the President of the United States to rename all federal public places including parks, buildings, and roadways that bear the names of elected and military leaders of the Confederacy. SJR 14 also urges Congress to remove statues of elected or military leaders of the Confederacy and place them in museums, where they can be viewed in their proper historical context.

We took amendments in the assembly to recognize that one year ago we had that terrible white supremacist demonstration in Charlottesville. It left one counter protester dead. We all know we must remain vigilant against racial hate that these Confederate Memorials still stoke. Just this summer after three years of debate city officials in Alexandria, Virginia voted to rename the Jefferson Davis Highway to the Richmond highway, so we are moving in the right direction. Our search for racial harmony could take one more step forward if Congress were to act on this resolution to remove these racially divisive symbols from all federal properties.
