SACRAMENTO – Sen. Steve Glazer (D-Contra Costa) called Friday for Gov. Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders to ensure that Californians who qualify for federal student loan forgiveness do not have to pay state income taxes on their forgiven debt.

Glazer, a former California State University trustee who is chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Student  Success, said he plans to introduce urgency legislation on the first day of the new legislative session in December to exempt the forgiven debts from state taxes.

Slavery was an evil that will forever be a stain on the history of our great country.

We eliminated it through the Civil War and the adoption of the 13th Amendment.

Involuntary servitude – though lesser known – also had a shameful past.

After the emancipation, southern states sent many blacks to prison on trumped up charges, then “leased” them to farms and factories where they were forced to work without pay.

It was slavery by another name.

But ACA 3 is not about slavery. Slavery is banned in California by the state Constitution.

SACRAMENTO – Three legislators on Friday introduced a bill to close a loophole used by school districts to get around public disclosure requirements for posting their salaries through the State Controller’s office.

SACRAMENTO – Three state senators have introduced legislation to bolster the free press that is one of the pillars of American democracy.

The bill, SB 911, by Sen. Steve Glazer, D-Contra Costa and principal co-authors Sens. Ben Allen, D-Santa Monica and Josh Newman, D-Fullerton, would provide state grants to individuals and organizations to help them cover issues of importance to their communities.

Sacramento – The California Legislature’s two leading members on election issues on Wednesday announced a coordinated effort to examine reforms to California’s recall election system.

Assembly member Marc Berman (D – Menlo Park) and Senator Steve Glazer (D – Contra Costa) said they are determined to fix a broken system in the wake of the 2021 gubernatorial recall election, which raised questions about whether a system designed in the early 20th century has enough checks and balances to ensure democratic and fair elections.

SACRAMENTO – Senator Steve Glazer, D-Contra Costa, today unveiled the Senate Constitutional Amendment 5 to strengthen the influence of students on the University of California (UC) Board of Regents by adding a second voting student member to the Board.

Currently, the UC Board of Regents is composed of 26 members, but only one voting student regent, selected by the Board, represents the students for a one-year term. A second non-voting student regent also serves on the Board.

ORINDA – Senator Steve Glazer, D-Contra Costa, announced today that he has added a district representative to his staff.
